It only SOUNDS like a Steven Seagal movie
Saw Zero Dark Thirty and... well... it's not the kind of movie you "enjoy," exactly, but I thought it was very good (though I may be biased by my huge girl-crush on Jessica Chastain). But the whole time, I couldn't help thinking, "You know, they'd have found Bin Laden, like, eight years ago if they'd just asked Garcia to help."
In other news, I finally finished watching TOS all the way through (I kind of slowed down toward the end because I knew it was almost over :oP). A few thoughts:
1) Pretty much all the lines/tropes we associate with TOS -- including the doomed red shirts -- don't show up at all until season two.
2) Every time anyone describes a planet as "paradise," WATCH OUT 'CAUSE SHIT GON' GO DOWN. You'd think they'd see a pattern.
3) Which reminds me, "This Side of Paradise" has to be the saddest episode ever, because not only does Kirk violate the hell out of the Prime Directive because he thinks human beings should be defined by suffering (okay, I'm paraphrasing, but whatever), but Spock absolutely breaks my heart when he says it's the first time in his life he's felt happy.
4) I thought the slashiest episode was actually "Requiem for Methuselah," because early on in the episode, Spock admits to feeling envy. Then Kirk falls hopelessly in love with a woman he's known for about 5 minutes (at least with Edith Keeler it took weeks and was somewhat believable), but oops! She's a fembot who implodes because of emotion (?!) and Kirk is so depressed he wants to forget her and falls asleep literally the instant he sets his head down on his desk and Spock Eternal-Sunshines her right out of his head. Okay, it's a little mind-rapey (maybe more than a little mind-rapey), but it's a sweet moment.
5) I'm almost glad the show ended when it did, because some of the third season... wow. Just... wow. I can deal with space!Indians (Native Americans?), space!hippies, and telekinetic!space!Romans, but I could not suspend my disbelief when it came to space!Lincoln - he would have kicked way more Klingon ass.
6) On the other hand, I wish it hadn't ended on "Turnabout Intruder," because ugh, terrible message, terrible writing, terrible acting. And the entire crew had immediately believed Spock was missing his brain but scoff at the idea that two people could switch bodies (and don't say "But the medical tests show..." SPOCK. WITHOUT. A BRAIN.)
Speaking of "Turnabout Intruder" and fics named thereafter and situations that shouldn't happen again, I am about 7k words into the sequel to "Tribute." I don't think I'm really even halfway done with it, but I just thought I'd let you know that I am making steady progress.
