It’s that time of year – my Oscar picks that no one asked for!  Last year I went an unimpressive 11 for 24 (45.8%), but I was 15 for 24 (62.5%) the year before that.  Still, I wouldn’t put any money on this.

Many of these, as usual, are total guesses, often based on how much I like/the pretentiousness of the title.  Of the nine Best Picture nominees, I’ve seen The Artist, The Help, Hugo, and Moneyball, and there really aren’t any others I care to see.

More Unsolicited Opinions:
*I think The Artist deserves to win.  It was creative and memorable and different.  And it had a little dog.  (Yes, I know Hugo had two little dogs, but did they save the day?  SPOILER ALERT They did not.)
* I think Woody Allen is overrated and God help me, Terrence Malick, maybe you are a genius, but I sat through approximately 327 distinct and lengthy shots of waving trees during The New World and I just… I can’t do any more.
*Jessica Chastain was delightful in The Help, but should have been nominated for The Debt instead.  (Actually, I think The Debt should have been nominated for a lot of things, but nobody asked me.)  I hope having two actresses nominated for the same movie in the same category doesn’t split the vote, because it would be really awesome to have black women win in both acting categories.
*I have no idea how Moneyball scored so many nominations.  There’s nothing really wrong with the movie and the subject is interesting, but there’s absolutely nothing memorable about it.  I guess I can see why Brad Pitt was nominated, but not Jonah Hill.  It’s not his fault – I don’t think his character was given any dimension by the screenwriters… which is why it flummoxes me that it’s also nominated for Best Screenplay.  Just because Aaron Sorkin was involved doesn’t make it ~magical~.
*Man, it was a sparse year for original songs, huh?  Gotta give it to the one where Sheldon plays the piano, though.
*There should be a category for Best Cover Song in a Motion Picture just to reward the genius of having Karen O cover “Immigrant Song.”  Though I wish the music didn’t blast over the vocals so often.  I don’t care if you are Trent Reznor – you hire Karen O, you get the fuck out of the way and let her do her thing.
*If Margin Call deserves anything, it’s Kevin Spacey for Best Supporting Actor.  And obviously Zachary Quinto for Best Hair (and Most Panty-Wetting Description of Fluid Dynamics, though he is the sole competitor in the category).  The script was not its strong point.
*Transformers: Dark of the Moon – a three-time Oscar nominee.  Think about that for a little while.  I mean really chew on it.  Mayan calendar's looking pretty good now, isn't it?
*I haven’t seen Bridesmaids.  I have a problem with vomiting in movies.  If I can hit fast forward quickly enough, will I be able to make it through?

Looking forward to Billy Crystal hosting -- yeah, he's kind of a safe standby, but he'll doubtless get some solidly funny moments in, and he can actually ad-lib.  Though we won't get to play Is James Franco Stoned? No, Really, Did He Show Up to This Thing Completely Blasted? Or Is He Just Like That All the Time?  I believe it was the conversation piece of the year.

And obviously Zachary Quinto for Best Hair (and Most Panty-Wetting Description of Fluid Dynamics - I WILL PERSONALLY PRESENT THESE AWARDS TO ZACH IN MY BEDROOM.

LOL about James Franco. So true.

So do we have guesses on whether Zach and Chris will be at the Oscars? I've almost convinced myself that they both might be in the right place to have been invited this year...

Yeah, Zach's movie's up for an award and Chris... looks really fucking good in a tux? That's reason enough, I'd say.

I WILL PERSONALLY PRESENT THESE AWARDS TO ZACH IN MY BEDROOM.

He can walk my red carpet, IF you know what I mean. (And I'm not sure I do.)

I think Zach is there, not sure about Chris yet. But he looks fucking good in a tux, so I don't see why he wouldn't be there. :-D

Yeah, the Oscars are the only big TV event I give a shit about. Can't deal with the pre-shows, though. Too much ass-kissing.

As long as it wins more Razzies than Oscars... well, I guess the world still makes sense.
