I didn't do the Favorite Lines bit or I never would've gotten this posted. )

I have a fic I hope to put up tonight, but I wanted to get the 2013 summary up first!  Maybe I'll do favorite lines later.

the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (DW - it are fact)

Just thought I'd let you know that [livejournal.com profile] gentlepolinka has translated Building a Better Resume into Russian.  You can find it here.

Yes, I am still writing, including the sequel to Tribute, which is at about 9,000 words and nowhere near finished.  It's turned kind of epic on me, but I'm chipping away at it.  Just out of curiosity, would people be interested in me posting what I've got as a WIP?  I don't usually like doing that (see: the Turnabout Intruder catastrophe), but I always finish what I start posting, even if it takes me a year.

I haven't been writing much in general ever since I finished that crazy Teen Wolf epic.  At first it was a little about fatigue, but then school really got into gear (in one class I have ~100 pages of reading and 10-20 pages of summary due every week, but at least there's no final paper) and I've been trying to have a social life, which has been time-intensive but less than successful.  And I read too much fic.  That's kind of a weird thing to say, but I don't know that it's necessarily good for my mental health, for various reasons.  Writing fic, on the other hand, is one of the few things that genuinely makes me happy... and I often have to read fic to keep me in the right headspace to write it.

Also I started playing Plants vs. Zombies a couple weeks ago and it was all downhill from there.  I don't always play video games, but when I do [DOS EQUIS GUY], I go crazy-person overboard.  Like, lists and spreadsheets and systems for efficiency.  FOR AN IPHONE GAME.  You would not believe what happened when I was into Pokemon.  There was a folder.  Which I keep in case I get into it again.  Which I probably will.

Why the hell do I have to buy bug spray for my underwater plants?  Zombies with traffic cones on their heads: fine.  Underwater bug spray: JUST WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO PULL HERE?

In case you were holding your breath, NaNoWriMo has officially become So, How Much Do I Write in a Month, Anyway? (SoHoMuDoIWriMo?)  Thus far it's a (comparatively) measly 9,412 words, though I hope to get in some more tonight.  Most of that has gone into two bits of original fiction, one of which is just... not working and will almost certainly end up on the scrap heap.  But they are WORDS THAT I WROTE, dammit, so they count.  According to NaNo stats, I've written an average of 724 words a day, which is not so bad.

How glad am I to have finished Turnabout Intruder?  So glad I don't know what to do with myself.  No, really.  I'll take suggestions.  Also, I can now bug other writers to finish their WIPs without being a giant hypocrite, yay!  ::cough cough celibate!Zach fic cough::

Semagic needs to get its shit together and let me view the history of my posts, because right now I can't update my Master List or interlink the parts of Turnabout Intruder.  Or rather I could try through regular ol' LJ, but it always fucks up my formatting.  Which is why I have Semagic.  :oP  If anyone knows of another way to edit past posts (easily -- remember I'm very lazy), let me know.
the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Hand kink SLKASLHNR)
Aw, I feel kinda bad that I don't have any ficcings for Chris' special day, 'specially since we made such a big deal out of Zach's birthday.  Chris, bb, we don't love you any less!  We just have Big Bangs and auction fics and unfinished epics that we keep being reminded about.  Or, you know, some of us.  ::sheepish grin::

So does anyone know when the deadline for dropping out of the RPF Big Bang is?  Because I have about 16,000 words of an old, old Pinto h/c (probably about 3/4 finished) that I can't decide if I want to try to knock into shape, or if I just want to set that aside and go back to shorter stuff for a while (excepting Turnabout Intruder, which is never far from my mind, I assure you).

Obviously, I am going through a bit of a transitional phase in my life at the moment, and have had less time for fandom.  I am going to try to officially schedule some time each day specifically for writing instead of just "eh, I'll try and get a bit in after lunch/before bed/whenever."  ACTUAL DISCIPLINE, WTF.  But I wrote and posted a Strunk/White all in one day, and that felt really good, so the writing mojo is still there, just... competing with more things these days.
the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Default)

I was combing through some old fic files and found about 1,600 words of a false start I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] medea_fic's RPF exchange prompt, the one that eventually became Feels Just Like It Should.  Reading over it, I realized that it's probably too specific for me to cannibalize for another fic, but I like some of it, so I thought what the hell, might as well post.

The prompt was for Chris and Zach to compete to see who could go the longest without jerking off.  What didn't quite work about my first attempt was that I set it during the filming of the second movie, and there seemed to be too many chances for them to cheat on the bet without getting caught.  I suppose I could have made it work, but it was just easier to set it during the press tour, when they would be around each other all the time and know if the other was illicitly beating his respective meat.  And then they started arguing in my head about donuts, and that was that.

Anyway, this is most of what would have been the first scene, plus two random scenes after that.  They are in no way complete or well-edited; I just kind of like them and wanted them to see the light of day, the poor neglected things.  Uh, PG for adult themes, I guess?  Stuff in bold is my notes.

'I don’t know, like, a week? Why what’s the longest you’ve gone without?' Karl asked. )

So, like I said, just randomness, but since I haven't posted fic in forever, I thought it might be nice to give you a little snippet of something.  I AM WORKING ON A THING, I SWEAR.  IT IS A FUN THING.  YOU WILL LIKE IT.  WHEN I FINISH IT.

the_deep_magic: (Brannigan strikes again)
Okay, while I'm trying my damnedest to get some stuff finished, how about a meme?  Because that will surely help my productivity...  Anyway, I saw this on [livejournal.com profile] 1lostone's journal when I was going back through some old posts and I thought I'd steal it.

Give me a link to one of my fics and I'll give you a detail that didn't make it into the fic - it could be background canon, deleted material (if I still have it), the music that helped me set the mood or a look into the future - or it could be a question about inspiration, the writing process, research, etc.

Just kind of a random question for fic writers -- if you run across a minor mistake (or, hell, a major one) in an old fic, do you go back and fix it?

I'm rereading Somewhere That's Green and I realized I mentioned something about them buying props at the Pottery Barn (an upscale furniture and decor place) when I meant to say Old Time Pottery (a dirt-cheap decorations and knick-knacks warehouse).  Though Old Time Pottery doesn't really work, either, since they only have stores in a few states in the south and in my head the fic is set in California.  So the line doesn't really make sense as it is, but I feel like if I start fixing things in old fics, I'll never stop.

Aside from little grammatical things and typos, I try to leave old fics alone -- once they're posted, they're done.  Plus, if I fiddle with it, I have to go back and change the word count or make sure it's the same number of words... yeah, that's the kind of thing that will bother me if it doesn't match up.  So I'm just curious what other people do.

In this case, I think I'm going to change it, and just make sure I replace it with an equal number of words.  IT IS SLASH FIC, SO I CAN GET ANAL IF I WANT TO.  Hurrrrr.
the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Imaginary men)
Saw Thor today, and I was impressed.  I'm not usually big on comic book movies, but I'll make exceptions for Kenneth Branaugh and (shirtless!) Papa Kirk.  It was good to see Rene Russo, too, though I wish they'd actually given her something to do.  Also, I realized I actually know fuck-all about Norse mythology, except the bit about the world ending in snow and ice and the sun being eaten by a wolf, because it was in an X Files episode.

I'm in no position to make demands, but if someone wanted to write some Pinto + Chris H, I would read the shit out of that.  I'm thinking CP enlists Chris H to top the hell out of Zach, manhandle him a bit while CP watches, but really, anything would be awesome.

Yeah, I think I had other things to say, but now I'm just thinking about this.  ::chinhands::

ETA: Okay, I remembered the things!  They're not that thrilling, though.

I've had to skip this round of [livejournal.com profile] trekrpfexchange because I just have TOO MUCH FIC to work on.  I want to do [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang and kink_bingo again, but I'm not even going to pretend I can deal with [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang, too.  :oP  I signed up for a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] beederiffic's Pornapalooza II, which wouldn't be such a big deal if I could actually write a fic in less than 10,000 words and two months anymore, which apparently I can't.  My PWP skills: are they lost to me?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lousy_science and [livejournal.com profile] leopardchic79 for the v-gifts!  One day I will figure out this whole v-gift thing and start giving them.  But, uh, not today.

Also, to [livejournal.com profile] darlapr0duction: I AM HARD AT WORK ON THE THING.  I am about three-quarters finished?  Just wanted to let you know I have definitely not forgotten.  I suppose I could have PM'd you, but now I've gone and typed it here, so, yeah.
the_deep_magic: (Brannigan strikes again)
Just wanted to write a quick note to everyone that's commented on my last few fics: THANK YOU!  Up until now I've been able to reply to everyone, even if it's just to say thanks, but I let myself fall behind, and now I have a ton of unacknowledged comments.  I feel bad about that, because feedback means a great deal to me and I want you all to know it, but for some reason, replying to the comments takes a significant amount of energy and time, two things I don't have a lot of at present.

I will get to them... eventually... but right now they're kind of looming over my head in a way that is not good for my ficcish productivity, so I need to set that aside for the moment.  Just know that if you've commented on Somewhere That's Green, Turnabout Intruder, Morning Glory, and possibly others, I have definitely read your comment and privately squee'd over it.  I really appreciate you taking the time to say something!
the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Default)

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] lousy_science was my Secret Santa! I totally knew Actually, I was completely surprised.  I didn't guess right for any of the authors except [livejournal.com profile] withthepilot and Chris and the Giant Package, because... yeah.  Who else? ;o)  Anyway, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lousy_science!  And since all the authors have been revealed, I can finally say...

HOLY SHIT, Y'ALL, I HAVE HAD "SUDDENLY SEYMOUR" STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR A MONTH AND A HALF.  ::wheeze, wheeze::

Okay, all better now.

Also: year-end fic meme!  It's the same one I did last year, plus a few additions.

Self-indulgence: I has it )

Well, looks like my New Year's Eve is going to be pretty sedate, but I hope you all have a good start to 2011.  2011, holy shit!  We are so oooooooold!

the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Lee Pace in eyeliner = invalid argument)
Okay, here's the thing: the past week or so has been (and always is) the busiest in the semester, so I haven't had as much down time to write.  And the stuff I am working on is long and plotty, so I haven't been posting much of it.  I do, however, have some free time coming up, so that should help.  In the mean time, here's what I'm working on, in vague order of urgency:

Don't click if you want to be completely surprised, I guess )

Also, thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions for the gnocchi.  I went with the butter and sage combo, and it was lovely!  The only thing was that I couldn't really taste the sweet potato -- I'd have thought they were regular gnocchi if it weren't for the package.  Ah, well, still good.

Update

the_deep_magic: (60% of the time it works everytime)
Hello, wonderful flist!  Just thought I'd let you know how the last part of Training Wheels is coming along, since you've all been so supportive and polite (e.g. not threatening me when it's not being posted fast enough).  It's mostly written, but I spent today reworking a large part that I wasn't happy with, so with final edits it should be ready to post tomorrow night, Monday night at the latest.  The good news is that there will be plenty to read -- right now, I'm looking at a 7000+ word chapter and a 4000 word epilogue.  Totally did not expect that.

I'll probably say it again in the author's notes, but a huge THANK YOU to everyone that's read and commented -- and even those of you who have read but not commented, or are waiting to read 'til it's finished.  This might be the longest single thing that I've ever written (~37,000 words at present, which is just a sneeze to some people but is a huge deal to me) and I have learned that I am naturally more of a sprinter than a marathon runner, so my endurance definitely needs work.  Honestly, before I started posting it, I read over what I had and wondered if it was even all that interesting, as nobody really wants to sit in and listen to someone else's therapy.  But your reactions have kept me going and probably helped the fic to grow longer and fuller than it would have been if I'd waited to post it all at once.  Please to enjoy my non-intentional innuendo there while you wait.

TL;DR -- Next chapter Sunday-ish; you guys rock!
the_deep_magic: (So then that happened)

H'okay, so.

Round about seven months ago, [livejournal.com profile] phenylic (formerly caughttheact) hosted a Pinto meme.  There was a prompt that I couldn't get out of my head, though I knew it was going to take time to write, so, without making any promises, I started on it.  And because I haven't got the patience for longer fic (I keep getting sidetracked by insty-grat stuff that I can post quickly) and I write relatively slowly, I'm still working on it.  I'm at a little over 20,000 words now, much of it written in the last few weeks, and I'm somewhere between two-thirds and three-quarters done.

Anyway, my point: I have the first two parts (I think five in all?  Maybe six?) ready to go, and I'm sick of staring at this thing, so I think I'll go ahead and start posting, and hopefully that'll give me the kick in the ass I need to finish it.  I'll post the parts here in my journal, but wait 'til I'm done to post the whole thing at [livejournal.com profile] pinto_fic.  There aren't any humongous cliffhangers, but there is a decent amount of angst.

Here's your job -- you're allowed to start kicking my ass if I go more than a week without posting a new part (though I totally understand if you want to wait 'til it's finished to start reading).  Have we got a deal?

the_deep_magic: (The Todd says: "Pinto five!")
On July 21, 2009, at 1:33 am, I posted my very first Pinto fic, Into the White.  Since then, I have posted 47 Pinto fics, to the tune of something like 190,000 words. (Okay, exactly 191,409.  I counted.  Shut up.) My most popular fic overall is probably Yellow Light, followed by Eleven Conversations About One Thing and Our Thing.  I love them all -- there's not one I'm not completely proud of -- but my favorites are the cracky ones.  They're always the most fun to write and the most fun to get comments on.

This has been by far the most productive year I've ever had in terms of writing, which is way awesome, and it's also the first time I've really been involved in a fandom in a non-lurkery way, and you guys have pretty much spoiled me for anything else.  I would give each and every one of you a big, wet smooch on the lips if I could, but instead I'll just let you know that I will be posting a little something before the day is out.  It will be Pinto and it will be porny.  The first anniversary is the flavored lube anniversary, right?

Keep rockin', Beanie BBs!
the_deep_magic: A nightmare inexplicably torn from the pages of Kafka! (Like a square wheel)
So I finally got around to doing that "I Write Like" meme, just to see if I got any consistency at all.  Twenty-five different writing samples (all from fics) yielded 10 different authors, though Stephen King and David Foster Wallace showed up much more often than any of the others at 8 and 7 times, respectively.  Which is a bit funny, since I love Stephen King but, God help me, I cannot get through an entire D.F. Wallace book to save my life.  Not even the ones of reasonable-length, and I almost never give up reading a book in the middle.  I even made it through American Psycho, even though I was by turns horribly nauseated and astoundingly bored.  But now is not the time for my Why Does Everyone Think Bret Easton Ellis is So Fucking Great, He Is Average at Best and None of His Characters Are Remotely Likeable rant.

Interestingly, I got almost entirely contemporary authors -- Jack London and Nabokov each showed up once and Raymond Chandler twice, but everyone else I got was/is alive and writing during my lifetime.  I don't know exactly which criteria the generator uses, but I'm not entirely surprised.  I use a lot of short paragraphs and a ton of dialogue and don't engage in a whole lot of description, so maybe that has something to do with it.  I did get Stephenie Meyer twice and Dan Brown once.  I haven't read any of the Twilight books, so I don't know what Meyer's actual writing is like -- should I be worried?  As for the Dan Brown... well, let's just call that a total anomaly, shall we?

I've got another Nina-verse fic just about finished.  I was going to wait and post it right after the humiliation fic to balance out the nasty with schmoop, but the nasty just isn't coming together.  Possibly because it's (go ahead and get your pearls clutch-ready) ZQ/Jeremy Irons with only background Pinto, and after the initial idea, my brain is now attempting to reject it.  Which one of you Jeremy-Irons-loving bastards has been hacking into my dreams?  Anyway, I might just go ahead and post the schmoop.

Wow, this post had more hostility in it than I'd originally intended.  I would like to hereby apologize to: Jeremy Irons, the estate of David Foster Wallace, fans of Bret Easton Ellis (even though you are woefully misguided, I still love you), and people who have not yet seen Inception.  Dan Brown can go jump in a lake and see if his piles and piles of hundred-dollar bills save him from the ravenous alligators.  THEY DON'T EAT MONEY, DANIEL.  YOU ARE STILL MADE OF MEAT LIKE THE REST OF US.

Is talking about sexual orientation in terms of teams (e.g. batting for the other team, switching teams) exclusively an Americanism?  Would, say, a Kiwi ever use it?

I have GOT to stop reading Jodi Picoult.  Not that I've read a ton of her books, but the process always seems the same: starts out with a fascinating premise, I get totally sucked in despite the unexceptional writing, and when I get to the ending, I want to put the book through a plate glass window because seriously.  Seriously.  Classical operas have way less melodrama than her books.  Yet I keep picking them up again because she writes about genuinely intriguing moral dilemmas and every now and again there are moments of real insight, even if I get the feeling even she's not entirely sure of the point she wants to make.

I should have prefaced that: I just finished Handle With Care and the ending was a double facepalmer.  Can anybody bitch with me?
the_deep_magic: (Air Quotin' Mulder)
So apparently there is a great -- and thusfar unmet -- need in this fandom for Chris in a collar?  I just might have to keep writing this series, but I need a name for it.  Any suggestions?  I'm terrible with titles.

I watched Dancing with the Stars (well, part of it) for the first time last week, then again this week, since recent RPF developments have made me curious about Evan Lysacek.  NGL, everything I know about him comes from [livejournal.com profile] perdiccas, therefore when the judges made that comment about "not connecting" with his partner, my first thought was "because she has laaaaaady parts!"  He and Michael Kors ought to have a bronze-off to see who can be the most orange.

Anyway, I don't think I'll keep up with the show -- I like watching Evan and Niecy Nash is 12 different flavors of awesome, but I don't give two shits about anyone else.  (Clarification: I have no beef with Buzz Aldrin, but do they have to play up the horny grandpa angle?  More importantly, do I have to watch it?  No.  That's what The Soup is for.  God bless you, Joel McHale.)

I swear there was something else I wanted to ramble on about, but it's escaped me at the moment.  I'm sure it was most inspired and witty.  Well, carry on and we'll see if I remember it later.
