In which my friend does Not Quite Get It
Sep. 28th, 2011 12:19 amI believe I may have mentioned that my friend loaned me the BBC Sherlock DVD? Well, I've finally watched all the episodes (all of three them, I know, what a feat). I've watched the first twice, and still think it's the best. The second is a little over the top, though I like the third save for the cliffhanger (and some other things). I suspect I will watch them all at least once more before returning the DVD. Hey, I hung on to this friend's copy of The Girl Who Played With Fire for over a year. Because I am a bitch like that.
So, wow, yes, loved it. Suspected I would. BTW, here's how the conversation between me and my friend went (walking into the theater to see The Debt)(which I believe I have already said was awesome):
Friend: (seeing RDJ poster in lobby) They're coming out with another Sherlock Holmes movie already?
Me: Yeah.
Friend: My friend Sara is a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and she hated the first one. Said it had nothing to do with the characters in the books. She loves the new BBC version, though.
Me: I've heard that's really good.
Friend: I have the DVD, I can let you borrow it.
Me: Sweet! I am totally taking you up on that.
(We take our seats)
Friend: Yeah, according to Sara, there's a ton of fanfiction out there for it, but most of it is... weird.
Me: Slash?
Friend: No, uh, Sherlock and Watson are kind of... they, uh...
Me: That's slash.
Friend: Um, okay.
Me: Say, this friend of yours, she wouldn't happen to write--
(previews start)
Friend: Shh, movie's starting.
So that was all I got out of her about that.
Anyhow, very much enjoyed the show once I got over the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch looks (and this goes counter to all my grad school PC-ness) sort of rape-y. The fact that, in the only other thing I've seen him in (Atonement), he played a rapist probably doesn't help. But I got over that pretty fast. And I love Martin Freeman. Oh, how I love Martin Freeman. He's the sort of guy that's, you know, kind of cute, I wouldn't describe him as gorgeous or hot or anything, but there's something about him that's just sort of... sexy. Like that whole exchange (and I'm paraphrasing):
Sherlock: Sure you've seen loads of violence.
Watson: Enough for a lifetime.
(pause)
Sherlock: Fancy seeing more.
Watson: Oh god, yes.
Shivers. Don't know what it is about him, but I feel the same way about David Thewlis (when he's not playing Remus, because then he belongs only to Sirius) and Hugh Laurie, who, let's face it, is a bit funny looking but can be sexy as fuck. So maybe it's a middle-aged British actor thing? IDK.
Anyway, I love the rapid-fire pace of it, which makes me excited to watch the episodes multiple times. It's also ended up being a suprising bonding thing with my Dad, who was a huge fan of the books back in the day. In fact, I have a copy of the short stories he gave me as a gift with a long inscription in the front about how much he enjoyed them. I only read a few, and it was a long time ago, but my dad says this is the closest Sherlock to what he read in the books -- always sort of teetering on the edge of morality and sanity. Which is why (though I did not say this aloud) he needs his Watson to hold him back.
Really drives home the fact that House is essentially Sherlock Holmes fanfic, doesn't it? They barely even changed "Holmes" to "House" and "Watson" to "Wilson."
So it's nice to have something in pop culture my dad and I can talk about. The weird thing is that we're so alike in personality and temperament, yet have such differing tastes. The only example you need: he's huge into NASCAR.
But Sherlock. I'll have to watch the last episode again, but I'm not sure how I feel about the interpretation of Moriarty as this fey, loopy gay guy who is brilliant yet... I don't know, I don't mean "effeminate" as an insult, but just... really? That's where you want to go with the major villain? Though slipping Sherlock his number was kind of a brilliant touch. I don't know, maybe I'll understand it better upon second viewing.
Many thanks for the recs I've gotten already, though I haven't had time to read through any of the long ones yet. I'm sure they're brilliant, but can anyone rec any good PWPs? That's more my attention span at the moment, sadly.

Date: 2011-09-28 06:03 am (UTC)That's cool about bonding with you Dad. Being home now, I get to bond with him over Star Trek occasionally, and that's super nice. Yay Sci Fi! (He also is my hero and suffers through Supernatural with me, cuz it airs later in my time zone and I need handholding.)

Date: 2011-09-30 10:24 pm (UTC)I bonded with my dad a little over Next Gen. I used to put my hairband down across my eyes and pretend to be Geordi. And then I would bump into things. That's my story: The End.

And after you read those fics, I recommend everything else by those authors too. All great. Enjoy!

Date: 2011-09-28 10:27 am (UTC)And I agree with the portrayal of Moriarty. If I'm honest his introduction somewhat spoiled things for me as I'd been expecting someone more sinister and he just seemed like a caricature. I don't know if you've seen it but there was a somewhat surreal British comedy called Father Ted a while back and all I could think about when he appeared was Father Noel Furlong

Date: 2011-09-30 10:28 pm (UTC)I've heard of Father Ted but not seen it. I hate it when I can't get an actor's completely unrelated character out of my head.

Date: 2011-09-28 05:45 pm (UTC)Aww that's adorable about you and your Dad<3 My Dad has the same love for Sherlock but he knows so much more about it and therefore I can barely make it into the conversation xD;;

Date: 2011-09-30 10:34 pm (UTC)And my dad knows waaaaaay more about Sherlock than I do. I haven't read the stories in years, and the only one I really remember is Hound of the Baskervilles, and all I really remember from THAT is a lot of howling on the moors. There is not a lot of howling on the moors in BBC Sherlock.

Date: 2011-09-28 06:32 pm (UTC)yeah, i adore the new series- i agree, the second is the weakest, but even so, it's still just fantastic. they're really got such a rapport.
re: moriarty- i had read the way he behaves as just being completely insane, rather than particularly gay or effeminate. he seems to cycle through about a dozen mannerisms in about two minutes, sticking mostly with whichever he thinks is likely to be the most abrasive. *shrug* i read some commentary from gadtiss and moffat where they said that they wanted a better villain, cause in the books moriarty's a bit of a buffoon sometimes, so they wanted someone scary, and unsettling, and i felt that edge of utterly bonkers did it for me...

Date: 2011-09-30 10:36 pm (UTC)Utterly plausible interpretation. I will have to watch it again. I just kind of thought they were setting up Moriarty as a Sherlock-gone-over-the-edge, but they went WAY over the top IMHO. Okay, now I want to rewatch it right now.

Date: 2011-09-29 11:47 am (UTC)1 is also my fav. I'm a huge sucker for "this is how it all begins" tales. And I lost count of how many times I've watched the cafe scene. 3 is my second favorite. And yes 2 is good, but bookended by the better stuff.
WELCOME TO SHERLOCK BB. Read all of basingstroke's fics on A03 ASAP!

Date: 2011-09-30 10:37 pm (UTC)Ooh, that's a good way of putting it.
I heard about that production of Frankenstein and was uber-jealous of the Beans that got to see it. Sounded amazing, and Frankenstein's one of my favorite books to start with.
Thanks for the rec!
