the_deep_magicGood news, lovers of fine art! Tonight you get not one, but TWO masterpieces.
Because we use loose charcoal on fancy-schmancy paper, we can wipe the paper "blank" like a chalkboard with a paper towel, so lately homedude's been having us draw more than one thing per class. I actually drew both sides of the torso last class, but wiped away all evidence of the front (which was just as well, because I could not get those stupid nipples to cooperate)(for serious, it looked like Judy Greer on Arrested Development).
Tonight we started with a mask (Beethoven's death mask, according to the instructor -- I have no idea if that's true). First we drew it with the light source on the left, then we did it again with the light source on the right. I regret I didn't get a picture of the first one, because I had more time on it and the shadows were a little bit sharper, making it easier to draw. But here is my second attempt at the mask:
You can kind of tell I chopped off the chin at the last minute and didn't have time to blend the shadow, but dude, faces are hard. Then we moved on to the less-exciting tiny pitcher (The thing you put cream in? Is there a word for that?) and pear still life. The pear was our first attempt at drawing something with ::gasp:: color. Everything up until now has been pure white so the shadows are easier to see. The teacher grabbed my charcoal and dicked around a little bit with it at the end, which I wish he hadn't done, but he didn't change it too much, mostly just added that weird black line under the creamer thing and called it a "core shadow."
The guy had white plaster hands and feet with him, too, which might be for next week. That scares the crap out of me, but then again I really thought I wouldn't be able to draw the mask, and I did okay. But still, hands have all those fingers. ::shudders::
