Can anyone recommend some good guided meditation CDs?  Things that focus on anxiety would be especially helpful, but any recs are good.  I've been trying to meditate more on my own, but that just generally leads to my my mind wandering and then I get frustrated until I'm eventually thinking "DAMMIT I AM GOING TO CLEAR MY MIND AND FUCKING MEDITATE RIGHT NOW IF IT FUCKING KILLS ME."  This is... counterproductive.

I've found "Be Still and Learn to Meditate" by Barbara J. Faison to be very helpful. I found it on iTunes. :D

Wait a second... You mean that's not how you're supposed to meditate???

I'm thinking of writing a book. I'll call it SHUT THE FUCK UP AND MEDITATE: JUST CLEAR YOUR FUCKING MIND ALREADY.

My colleague swears by Jack Kornfield - looks like he has some tracks on YouTube to start with.

When I want to clear the mind (and block out neighbor noise), I play MP3s of thunderstorms or rain or pretty much any nature thing. These help me focus more easily than someone talking at me. I tend not to like the ones with music. I prefer to listen to bird song or the lapping of water against a boat.

Yeah, I should probably try some different things, see what works.

That kind of stuff never has worked for me. Hopefully you can find something that will help you because I usually end up with something similar to your second to last sentence, like, "Thisstupidfuckingmediationshitdoesnotfuckingworkomgfuckfuckfuck." Yeah...

I've had some luck with guided imagery-type stuff, where I'm given specific things to think about. But otherwise, yeah, otherwise it's a mental train wreck.

It's not strictly meditation stuff, I'm more of the calm-down-don't-slit-your-wrists type, but focused thinking might be focused thinking.

The mindfulness stuff I use is using each breath to focus your thinking, like become a plant in the ground. Each breath grounds you deeper and every outward breath turns more of your skin to dirt which sloughs off into the ground creating the roots blah blee. You can also make yourself liquid, of course.

Simpler. Assign a color to numbers and count to or back. From 140 by threes in purple. Everytime you let any of it go, you have to start over.

Yes, it is annoying, but if you commit to doing that, it engages your unconscious mind as well (this is the goal), which in turn, allows your conscious mind to begin to learn what it feels like to get off the hamster wheel.

Anything that promises you "inner peace" in five easy sessions is lying to you.

good luck. :-)

I've tried the mindfulness stuff, and I just haven't got the hang of it. The counting is a good idea, though -- I'll give it a shot. I know it takes practice. :oP Stupid practice.

I've never tried meditating. I think my mind jumps around so damn much that I end up feeling guilty for trying to focus. I usually blast music, but it's not meditate-y music. :)

Sorry bb!!! <3

Ha ha, no worries. If you've got a system that works, go for it!

I am the same way and I won't lie, guided meditation never helped. Neither did yoga music or like, trickling stream sounds. I need things that are repetitive, rhythmic patterns that my brain can focus on. I have an app on my phone called Relax and Sleep that has a lot of sounds that I like -- cat purr, clock large, drum melody, and horse trot are my staples, and I usually have something melodic in the background. That's what works best for me.

Hmm, I'll search for that and see if it's helpful. Thanks!
