Saw The Dark Knight Rises!  (I want to say "finally," even though it's been out less than a week.)  I was super-excited just to GO to the movies, because I think I'm going to miss out on Brave, Magic Mike, Spiderman, Moonrise Kingdom, etc.  WHY AM I SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO EITHER DON'T LIKE MOVIES OR GO SEE THEM WITHOUT ME?  I suppose I could go see them by myself, but something about going to see Magic Mike all alone strikes me as the most pathetic thing I could possibly do, so I'll just... wait 'til it's on Netflix and watch it alone at home.  ::facepalm::

Thoughts, in no particular order:

~Not a whole lot of actual Batman, was there?  Probably 20 minutes of screen time all told, if that.  Two good solid hours of Bat-Angst, though.

~I think I am finally able to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as someone other than Tommy from Third Rock From the Sun.  Even in Inception, it was iffy.  It's not his fault; he's a perfectly good actor.  It's just that he still looks like he's a teenager (not that I can throw stones) and it's hard to un-see Tommy.

~On a (kind-of) related note, I might be starting to warm up to Anne Hathaway.  She's on that list of Actors I Want to Like But For No Good Reason I Just Can't (see: Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire, etc.).  I thought she'd really annoy me as Catwoman, but she didn't play it vampy, and that helped.  Still, though, something about her bothers me.  Maybe it's the teeth.  Too perfect.

~Oh Tom Hardy, what were you doing?  IMDb says you based the accent on some kind of Irish Romani Latin boxer (OBVIOUSLY), and I don't know what that's supposed to sound like, but I don't think it's Sean Connery.  I mean, at no point during the production did somebody at least lift a skeptical eyebrow?  I think actors nowadays have a tendency to really overthink it when they play villains.  A lot of times it works, and I get that you don't want to play some stock character, but there's something to be said for just going from the gut.

~Surprise Cillian Murphy cameo!  I nearly danced in my seat.  UNF, THE GLASSES, THEY STILL DO ~THINGS~ TO ME.  Good to see Qui-Gon Liam Neeson, too.

~Excellent twist with Miranda Tate there at the end, but it kind of took the stuffing out of Bane.  I wish we'd gotten to see more of the two of them together after the Big Reveal, because I think that relationship is fascinating, and you don't really get to process it.  All you get is that moment where she plugs his face-thingy back together, which is really unexpectedly tender and might be one of the best bits of the movie.  And then he just gets shot, The End.

~In fact, the whole ending seemed rushed (yes, okay, I know there was a bomb countdown, which I thought was more than a bit cliched).  So, there's five months of nothing... and then OMG we have to find the right truck and get it to the reactor thingy and stabilize it and get all the policemen out and WE HAVE 12 MINUTES TO DO IT!  Okay, so it was a long movie already, and we have to get a sense of urgency somehow, but I think it might have been a better choice to show an underground (literally) resistance building and then finally erupting.

~Yeah, unstable nuclear device banging around in the back of a truck. No problems there. Really, it'll probably be just fine. Don't even need to wrap it in newspaper.

~Still trying to figure out the logic of the whole let-the-city-tear-itself-apart-then-blow-it-to-smithereens Master Plan.  I get letting the city tear itself apart OR destroying it (wasn't that Ra's Al-Ghul's original plan, to destroy the whole thing and sort of let society reset itself?).  And I get holding the threat of a nuclear device over the city to incite chaos and terror, but why bother if you're just going to blow it up?  I mean, maybe if you're trying to show the rest of the world "this is what happens when human nature overtakes society," but that's more of a Joker motivation, and it wasn't a theme that was explored, anyway.  The five-month delay only served to let Bruce Wayne re-Batman himself (yes, that's a new word; roll with it), which is not something you really want to facilitate if you're a Gotham villain.

~The Batsuit isn't small-knife-proof?  Really?  Really?  Low-quality chain mail or possibly a sturdy leather jacket would protect you from that.

~Did anyone else think it was kind of funny that everyone and their mother figured out that Bruce Wayne was Batman before Commissioner Gordon did, even though he's the one that's probably had the most interaction with Batman throughout all three movies?

Verdict: very enjoyable, if a little flawed.  Ultimately, I think The Dark Knight was the better movie, but I have a documented predilection for the second part of movie trilogies (Empire Strikes Back, The Two Towers, Godfather Part II, etc.).  Still, a worthy ending for the Nolan Batman saga.

Now all I want from life is a scene where the hired goons try wrapping the nuke in newspaper before loading it on the truck.

"Dammit, Jerry, you were supposed to bring a truckful of packing peanuts!"

"It'll be fine. Just drive slow and take it easy on the corners."

You're always welcome to join me/us for movies (but it is a long swim between continents).magic Mike is admittedly better with a group, but the rest? Hah - I often go by myself these days!

Yeah, I think I'm going to be doing that more often. Though Magic Mike is one you have to share with your girlfriends. Maybe I can con my sister into going with me.

I kept waiting for someone to smack Gordon on the back of the head & tell him to pay attention. "Come on, everyone knows it's Bruce Wayne. It's old news!"

"No, but, see, Batman wears a MASK. Bruce Wayne does NOT wear a mask. And they are totally friends on Facebook."

I went to see Moonrise Kingdom by myself because none of my friends had any interest in it, and it was really nice. I went on a Sunday morning so the cinema was quite empty anyway.

Yeah, I used to do that with indie movies when Cinema Buff Friend was out of town. I'll probably have to start going by myself more often. It's not a bad experience for certain movies.
