the_deep_magic: (In which Jayne is wise)

Just got back from LA on Monday night, and, boy, are my arms tired! No, wait, that's not the joke... Dammit...

I think I need to get the shouting out of the way first: DAMMIT I DID NOT KNOW THEY WERE HAVING THE STAR TREK DVD PARTY AT THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY BUT I WAS TOTALLY THERE ON SATURDAY AND I COULD HAVE, LIKE, HID OUT IN THE BATHROOM FOR TWO DAYS AND I WOULD'VE MISSED MY FLIGHT AND IT WOULD'VE BEEN TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Okay, all better. Well, kinda. So, yeah, LA was fun. I was visiting one of my oldest and best friends who recently graduated law school, and the trip was entirely too short. But both of us had to get back to work so we can afford our opulent lifestyles full of basic cable and brand-name grape juice. Highlights:

~Saw the Cirque du Soleil show Kooza. As for the location, the tickets just said "Santa Monica Pier," and my friend said, "Uh, I think there's a tent?" and I just laughed because, really? A tent? Yup. I mean, it was a big-ass tent, but still. Also, it was more like a traditional circus than the other Cirque shows I've seen (La Nouba, O, and Zumanity -- ain't I cultured?). That's not a bad thing, of course, but tickets to the traditional circus cost about half that. Regardless, super-muscle-y dude with full leg tattoos doing char-crobatics = fun times.

~Took a tour of the Warner Bros. Studios. The high point was seeing Adam Baldwin (from Firefly -- not [I cannot stress this enough] a Baldwin brother) on a bike just outside the soundstage where Chuck was filming. He waved to our little tram as we drove past and said we had the best tour guide, and I was too bzuh? to go for my camera, but it's just as well. You'll be proud of me -- I didn't yell "JAYNE'S A GIRL'S NAME!" or anything embarrassing like that at all, though I may have actually said "Bzuh?" The tour guide said he's super-nice. My only celebrity sighting, but a good one.

~Didn't get anywhere near Silverlake -- the closest I got was the Griffith Observatory -- but that's just as well, as well. On the plane ride home, I was composing a little essay in my head on the surrealness of celebrity, and I may write it one day, but the gist was something like: OMG, trying to hunt down Chris and/or Zach would be totally weird in a way I'm not quite okay with. Back in high school, I had a friend that was totally in love with David Boreanaz, and she wanted to meet him but she was afraid the first words out of her mouth would be "Uh... can I lick your earlobe?" That has nothing to do with the mini-essay, but I find it somewhat applicable nonetheless.

~Went bowling in a kinda skeevy Hollywood bowling alley for my friend's friend's friend's birthday and ended up kicking everybody's ass somehow. I've been told the way I bowl looks hilarious (there's a little shuffle step in there, and I apparently swing my arm back really far), but it occasionally does get results. It was late when we finished, and I would've just as soon gone home, but there was a guy there that I'm pretty sure my friend has a crush on, because before I knew it, we were wandering around the streets of Hollywood, ducking in and out of bars because Miiiiiiiiiiiiike wants a pina colaaaaaaaaaaaaaaada. The guy was nice and all, but it was 1 in the morning and freezing cold out and I don't drink but I fucking hate coconut anyway. I had a bad experience as a child.

~Venice Beach was, by turns, pretty and tacky, though no more so than anything here in FL. I love love LOVE the giant expensive beachside houses with the huge Buddha statues out front. That whole detachment from worldy desires thing, not so much, eh? It feeds my irony generator.

~Saw the movie The Box at one of the old-timey, one-huge-screen theaters, which was pretty sweet. Y'know, the movie got panned, but I kind of liked it even though, sheesh, was no one but Cameron Diaz available? I don't actively dislike her, but I thought she was terribly miscast.

Okay, so I think I've rambled on long enough. I'm trying to get back in a writing frame of mind -- it's going well. I'm writing something so hot that I have to keep taking breaks so I don't get the vapors. ;o) It might just be a me thing, but I like it.

Adam comes to Dragon*con pretty frequently, and he is TOTALLY a sweet guy and very funny and so much cuter when he's not on tv playing one of his mean and/or stupid characters. :D

You're writing something hott? *awaits*

Well, I think it's hot, anyway. Also, there are VISUAL AIDS, and I keep distracting myself with the VISUAL AIDS.
