And lo, I sought out the only IMAX theater within 20 miles and got myself good and lost on the way there, but STILL managed to get there in time for previews for The Hobbit.

Thoughts on The First Nine Minutes:

Okay, so I cheated and watched a pirated version yesterday, because I don't like going to the movies alone.  But then I realized that when I go home for Christmas, I'm probably not going to find anyone willing to drive with me clear across town to an IMAX theater just for the 9-minute ST preview (I know; my family and friends have their priorities all screwed up), so I decided the hell with it, I'll just go see it on my own.

And it is almost worth the ticket price alone (though I did see a matinee).  Hoooo shit.  Remember when I said before I wasn't anxious for May to get here because of thesis reasons?  Yeah, fuck that.  MAY NEEDS TO BE HERE NOW SO I KNOW HOW SPOCK GETS OUT OF THAT VOLCANO.  And Spock, you really need to stop giving into that martyr impulse every time you get into peril.  You will make everyone's life very difficult.

Anyway, happy-making things:
~We have seen the future, and it contains big, fluffy doggies.
~Jim's "This is My Totally-Not-Violating-the-Prime-Directive Robe" robe
~Jim immediately forgetting (and being willing to violate the hell out of) the Prime Directive to get Spock back
~Okay, the helmet kiss was cute, but that seemed to be the only reason to put the communications officer on a shuttle going into a volcano.  "Hey you guys, remember how these two are hooking up?  No?  Let us remind you in the first five minutes of the movie."  (Note: I am not anti-Spock/Uhura, I just have issues with the way they went about establishing it in the last movie.  I hope they develop it better in this one.)
~I'd forgotten just how distinctive and impactful the music is.  Excellent, excellent score.
~A lot of the stuff from the trailer was from the first nine minutes -- which is awesome, because that means it doesn't give away the whole plot of the movie.
~HOLY SHIT DID SPOCK JUST SAY "THE NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE FEW"?  For reals, I'm kind of glad I watched the thing at home first, because I honestly squeaked aloud at that part.  And I am not terribly squeak-prone.

I am trying to get behind Benedict Cumberbatch, because I think he's brilliant in Sherlock and will make an excellent villain, but all the debate about OMG WHO IS HE has me kind of sick of it at this point.  Honestly, I think he's going to be a melange of different canon villains, throwing little nods in to everyone that's been mentioned as a possibility because the writers seem to like to do that.  After recently rewatching II, III, and IV and making my way through TOS, I've become more and more aware of the hodgepodge way JJ and the writers went about referencing the original.  And it really shouldn't work without being kitschy, but it does, so I am just going to JJ & Co. and not get creeped out by pictures of BC with his natural hair color.

And typing this whole thing out is for some reason reminding me of The X Files pilot with the whole "We just lost nine minutes!" bit.  WE HAVE FOUND THOSE MINUTES, AND THEY ARE STAR TREK. [/weird]

Aaaaand onto The Hobbit: The Unexpected Stretching of This Book Into Three Movies:

So, yeah, I'm obviously on the fence about that decision.  Full disclosure: I have not read the book since Mrs. Green's 7th grade English class (though I still have that copy sitting right next to me, wrapped in translucent yellow book cover from when I went through my book covering phase), though I remember it being a fairly simple story.  I like the idea of Peter Jackson taking extra material from the Tolkein-verse and weaving it in to make a richer story, but three movies?  Really?  If they did Lord of the Rings now, the studio would probably insist on nine separate movies.  Oy.

If I may: LEE PACE IS RIDING AN ELK.  WHERE IS A GOOD "NOT SURE IF CONFUSED OR AROUSED" MACRO?

Anyway, I don't have a lot to say about the actual movie -- though it immediately puts you right back in the 'verse PJ & Co. (yeah, they're all sort of movie-making conglomerates these days) created for LotR, and the "Riddles in the Dark" sequence is perfection -- because apparently I have all these weird emotional ties to the source material.  It would take too long to explain here and bore the crap out of you, but apparently The Hobbit is deeply tied in to my experience of middle school.  In a good way, because middle school was actually a very positive time in my life (it was all downhill from there, really), but... I don't know, it's really hard to articulate.  Reliving the story -- which in itself is not particularly meaningful to me -- brought up a bunch of memories I hadn't thought about in a long time, and those led to other memories, which led to this rambling entry.

And it made me want to rewatch all the extended editions of the LotR movies.  I thought about trying to marathon them all in one day, but I do actually have to not be a total dick and buy people Christmas presents before the weekend, so I watched Fellowship tonight, and I'll watch the other two over the next two days.  It was pretty cool to recognize all the little hat-tips to The Hobbit all throughout Fellowship.

I suppose it's worth noting that, while I wasn't really involved in LotR fandom (though I lurked heavily in the RPS faction), one of the first -- if not the first -- slash fics that I ever read and actually enjoyed was a short Aragorn/Legolas fic.  Of course, I can't remember the title or much about it other than that there was a brief reference to some very manly hair braiding?  Eh, there's no accounting for (my) taste, I suppose.

A lot of the stuff from the trailer was from the first nine minutes -- which is awesome, because that means it doesn't give away the whole plot of the movie. - Yes! I had this exact same thought!

Going into it, I had this sudden thought where I was like, "WAIT - what if this ends on a cliff-hanger and I have to wait 5 months to see the rest?!" Then I was like "well of COURSE that's going to happen, and I'm going to see it anyway" and then at the end I was like "What have I done to myself?!" But it was worth it and glorious and hopefully I won't have a stress ulcer by May from thinking about it too much ;-)

I just like to imagine Spock making it safely back to the ship and his quarters, where Kirk throws his arms around him, then turns Spock over his knee and spanks him for being all "Don't rescue me."

Uhura watches with approval.

So, yeah, that's what's getting ME through the next 5 months...

I like how you think. Stealing your idea to keep me going until May...

Going to see The Hobbit with my nephew this weekend on the largest IMAX screen in Michigan. I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE STAR TREK PREVIEW. Am beyond excited now.
