I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World over the weekend, and for the most part I liked it.

I've absolutely no familiarity with the comic book whatsoever, so I don't know how much of the style comes from Edgar Wright and how much from the original author, but I liked the video game-y touches, and I'm not much of a gamer.  Michael Cera was adorable as always, but he might have been... dare I say it?  Too much of a woobie.  Like, we're supposed to believe Scott is kind of a jerk, but with Michael Cera it's kind of, "Awww, you're cheating on your underage girlfriend?  How cuuuuuute!  You'll grow out of it."  But his comic timing is fantastic, so I dealt with it.  And Jason Schwartzman is never not awesome.  He's like a hipster god; I imagine he floats around LA on a cloud of irony.

The one major quibble I had was that we don't really get to see what it is about Ramona that makes Scott so butt-crazy about her.  Her major personality trait seems to be that she changes her hair color.  I kept thinking of that line from 10 Things I Hate About You -- "What is it with this chick?  She got beer-flavored nipples or something?"  Ramona is literally only defined by her exes and by Scott's attraction to her, which is, I gather, the exact opposite of the point the movie is trying to make.  Come to think of it, the only female character who displays any actual agency is Knives, when she challenges Ramona to a duel... over Scott.  Even Roxy Richter* (A+ for the idea of including a bisexual relationship in there, C- for execution) makes it clear she's only attacking Scott because Gideon told her to.  Ick.

*I knew Roxy looked familiar -- she's Bland Ann from Arrested Development!

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it -- grad school pretty much trains you to do that.  I feel like I only write about books/movies/shows here to complain about them, but the truth is that I'm overly critical of just about everything.  I bang my head against the wall over Bones all the time, but I still watch it.  And the first two Stieg Larsson books made me want to tear my hair out every time he name-checked an Apple or IKEA product (I lost a lot of hair), but I still want to read the third one.

Also, a meme:

Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or literary or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! Fandoms, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs. And I will answer them in the comments.

Ok, I don't think I listed the questions right at all, I apoligize, lol.

So ill just change my question to: top 5 favorite pairings in any fandoms.

I have a terrible habit of reading things too quick and not taking the the time to process it. Because I instantly thought 'any 5 q's'. I apoligize for doing that and loading up your post with my comments. *is a wee bit embarassed*

Ha ha, no worries, I'll answer both!

1) Spring -- I love things turning green again
2) Baths, though I rarely take them
3) Microsoft grammar check, people who say "like" or "y'know" every other word
4) Right now, slash, but I tend to have (years-long) phases where I'll read only one or the other
5) Ooh, that's tough, because they're both so appealing in different ways. I really don't want to choose, but gun to my head... Zach.

As for the hair, I'm actually so used to dealing with it that I doubt I spend more time trying to tame it than anyone else. Probably less, since I don't blow dry it and rarely style it in anything more complicated than a braid or a bun. Hairsticks are my best friends, though -- I can just twist my hair into a bun, stick them in, and go.

Okay, now my favorite pairings (in order of when I shipped them):

1) Quinn/Wade, Sliders (mid-90s sci-fi show on Fox)
2) Mulder/Scully, The X Files
3) Billy Boyd/Dominic Monaghan, LotR RPS
4) Remus/Sirius, Harry Potter
5a) Kirk/Spock
5b) Zach/Chris

(Okay, I cheated a little, but I couldn't reduce it to 5! Honorable mentions: Jarod/Miss Parker from The Pretender, Zoe/Wash from Firefly, and Booth/Brennan from Bones)
