Stealing this from [livejournal.com profile] perdiccas, because it seems like (slightly nasty) fun.

Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.

And then we can fight with knives!

Not quite sure how the knife fight fits in, but... sure, why not?

Ok, here's mine:

1. TOS

Ooh, boy, I haven't dabbled a whole lot in TOS fandom, but here goes...

1) It's, um. It's silly. The show is just silly. And that certainly doesn't keep me from watching or enjoying it, but I don't think I'd ever have gotten into shipping K/S if it weren't for the new movie.

2) I didn't see Amok Time until after I'd started shipping it and I was... underwhelmed.

3) I just can't get into earlier (70s & 80s) fic. I realize the medium was pretty new and I'm just used to a different style, but those fics seem pretty overwrought. BUT TONS OF RESPECT FOR THE SLASHERS WHO WENT BEFORE US.

1. Yeah, it can be a bit silly sometimes. I kind of like that about it, though. There are certain episodes that I watch when I need to de-stress which usually end up being the more ridiculous ones.

2. I would call this blasphemy, but I'm too nice a person. For me, it's a defining episode of not just the fandom, but the series as a whole (along with "Metamorphosis", which, if you haven't seen, you should!). I'm not sure how to put it into words, other than to say that, even if I ignore the slash (and I admit some of the signs are subtle, but I like TV shows that make me think), it's still a beautiful story of how far Kirk is willing to go to help Spock.

3. Really? Some of my favorite fics are older ones! But I can understand your point-- some of the language is weird, and the plot devices don't always work the way the authors intend. Which isn't so much a reflection on their writing skills as it is the newness of the fandom at that point (which you pointed out). And I agree-- I have serious respect for all the fans who paved the way for us to be able to fangirl to our hearts content!

I think the problem was that I built Amok Time up too much in my head and was half-expecting them to go at it right there in the sand. ;o) But what I really need to do, I think, is watch the episodes in order. I might appreciate the whole series better that way.

Wathing the episodes in order is a good idea-- things make more sense and it's more fun that way! Not that I don't have my favorites that I watch out of order, sometimes ("A Piece of the Action", which is essentially an excuse to see Kirk and Spock wearing suits for most of the episode; "Patters of Force", because I can never stop staring at bare-chested Kirk and Spock).

Ooh, this is tough -- I feel like everyone probably knows most of my Pinto opinions by now!

1) I don't have a problem with the older man/younger man thing. I stopped using it in my fic because I know a lot of people have a very strong negative reaction to it (and, well, I don't think it actually added anything to the fic), but it just doesn't bother my like it bothers some people.

2) This isn't just Pinto-related, but it seems to come up (hurrr) fairly often -- facials do nothing for me. They don't squick me exactly (in fic, at least), but it's just kind of like... why?

3) People occasionally drop things like "Yeah, from what I've seen, Chris is a douchebag" as though it's totally obvious, but they never say why they think that. What, exactly, have they seen? I've seen most of what little there is to see about Chris the Real Person, and I don't see any evidence of douchebaggery. Yeah, he isn't as gregarious as Zach and, yeah, he's rude to the paps, but that's about it, from what I can tell. I would agree that he might initially give off kind of a frat boy vibe... until he opens his mouth and is every bit as thoughtful and eloquent as Zach is.

And because the prompt said AT LEAST three...

4) I just can't get into Pinto chat. It makes me feel like an old lady -- it seems spastic and disconnected and I'm not even sure how anyone's actually communicating. Most of the time it seems like people just shouting random things at each other. But I was never a fan of chat rooms in general, so there you go. :o)

i like pintochat in smallish doses. and i will admit to lurking. i get overwhelmed if i try to respond to everyone. it can be random, but sometimes it's really fun.

This is why I will never understand fandom, ever, lol.

To keep it short-people get angry about a 2-3 year age difference? They're both in their 30's, ZQ is slightly older...what's the fuss about? To me, they're still handsome, intelligent, charming men, and I like reading about them doing sexual things to one another, I don't care what they're labeled as in fic. Just nothing berating IMO.

And I agree on the facials. Altogether, I just think its demeaning to do it to anyone (not wanting it I guess?) But I wouldn't mind seeing more of cumming on one another's stomachs, or maybe on the ass/backside? That's just me. (I feel a little vulgar leaving that comment there about cumming, I apologize!)

This is why I'm glad I don't attempt writing. I just enjoy the couplings? amd try not to get too caught up in details.

Or (excuse my vulgar-ness again) I wouldn't mind reading tasteful 69-ing? Can that be done tastefully? :\

Date: 2010-10-19 04:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] the-deep-magic.livejournal.com
I don't think it's the age so much as the use of epithets in the writing. And people do make the fair point that they're so close in age as to make the older man/younger man thing seem silly. So I understand why it annoys people, I just don't have that same gut reaction.

Ha ha, no need to worry about being vulgar around here! ;o) And yes, I'm sure a tasteful 69 is quite possible. I find them really tough to write, though -- I get all caught up in whose limbs are supposed to be where and what can and can't bend that way and I kind of lose the sexiness. Well-written 69 is super hot, though!

1) Kirk/McCoy is wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. As [livejournal.com profile] beedlebarg said, Kirk belongs to Spock, always has and always will.

2) I love Karl Urban, I do, but his Bones was more of an impression of Deforest Kelley than an original performance. It really wasn't his best work.

3) Just so it's not all Beat Up On Bones, WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THIS "VOTE ON THE STAR TREK THEME SONG" THAT GETS POSTED EVERY DAMN DAY? Yes, I suppose it would be nice to have the song played on the last space shuttle mission, but I joined kirkspock for the porn. This contest has been going on for MONTHS now, and if at some point I did actually care, I have long since stopped. Matter of fact, I started voting for other songs out of spite. "Magic Carpet Ride" is just a superior piece of music. SOMEONE CAME AND TOOK HIS LAMP AWAY, PEOPLE. RECOGNIZE.

1) YES OMG YES

2) yeah... sad, but true. and his accent slips. and some of his lines are just clunkers, which is not his fault.

3)YES... i voted a few times at first, thinking it was gonna be like a week-long thing or something, but OMG.... so lonnnng...
