Has anyone ever taken the Myers-Briggs Career Report (not just the personality profile) or the Strong Interest Inventory with an eye toward career choice?  It's been recommended that I take them... but they cost money.  Not an insignificant amount of money.  I was wondering if anyone had found them particularly helpful or unhelpful.

i did, once. it said i should be a priest or a therapist. which, yeah, same thing, but one uses more incense. and... i dunno. i mean, i'm not, obviously, either. but i can see why either would be sound advice for me. i did end up going to seminary, though i was non-ordination track, and i think i would be a pretty decent therapist. but the reason i haven't done either, really, is that i think i would burn out. i love religion, i love faith, but if it were my job, i think i would learn to hate it. same reason i didn't major in music- i couldn't imagine what my life would be like if music became work, and i could see how that would happen.

i guess i think... it can give you useful info, maybe bring up things you hadn't otherwise thought of. but at the end of the day, if you don't feel good about any of the options it gives you, then you shouldn't do them. it's more important to do something you like than something you're good at. :)

then again, i'm chronically under-employed, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me. heh.

BB, you're a writer, you just need a day job.

I took a few things, I think, back in highschool... but I don't really recall the results. They were kind of all over the map, just like me.

I DEFINITELY took the You Have ADD Career Inventory Test (YHADDCIT), where you go to a number of jobs, lose them all from inability to focus within the first few weeks/months, and then finally land in one where you can make it to the six month mark and get your college degree in THAT THING.

I've taken them a couple of times, always with the same result (librarian or teacher), which was... not news? I don't know anyone whose taken them who found them particularly helpful tbh.

I wouldn't pay for one, I would get to a library and read up on Myers-Briggs stuff enough to extrapolate the suggestions for the personality type they think you have, as it doesn't drill down that far beyond your type (and while I know some people who have found great personal insights with their MB type, I don't have a strong type).
