The Debt is a brilliant movie and you must go see it immediately.  UNLESS you have a gynecologist appointment coming up this week, in which case FOR GOD'S SAKE, WAIT UNTIL AFTERWARD.  ::shudder::

Okay, it could have been a lot squickier.  But still, be prepared to grab onto something/someone.

Also, can I just be Helen Mirren?  Is that possible?  Because she kicks so much ass in everything.  If she and Jessica Chastain aren't nominated for something, I will vomit with rage.  Actually, the acting's good all round, except Tom Wilkinson (a That Guy) is weirdly miscast as an older Marton Csokas (Celeborn, if you speak Nerdish).

And now for something completely different: [livejournal.com profile] zjofierose showed me a website on 1930s moon-style manicures, and I tried it out myself.

I didn't follow the whole manicure-prep castor oil thing, but I did use base coat and top coat, which I rarely bother with.  I used a silver shade for the lighter coat, and OPI Bogota Blackberry (one of my favorites) for the top.

It's a great color combination, but instead of using hole reinforcers like the instructions say (I didn't have any because, uh, I'm not in the 4th grade ;o)), I used French manicure sticky guides, which have less of a curve to them.  As a result, the "moons" ended up looking more like wonky stripes, and probably should have been smaller.  But not bad for a first attempt.  If only it didn't take so damn long -- I did it over two nights, and the right-hand nails still got a little smushy because they weren't completely set when I went to bed.

Some of the French manicure guides I have left over are straight lines, so I might go for stripes next.  If this all seems a bit out of character for me, it sort of is.  I'm just about the least girly-girl ever, but I'm prissy about two things: my nails and my hair.  I used to do all sorts of fun hairstyles in high school.  Maybe I'll have to start playing around with that again, now that I've got the time and some actual energy...

ETA: Oh oh oh!  Forgot to mention that my friend loaned me the BBC Sherlock.  She loves it, which inadvertantly led into a discussion about slash, only she didn't know what slash was... nor did she seem interested.  Oh, well.  I can't believe it's only three episodes!  Will watch ASAP!

Yeah, my problem is that if I'm sitting still for very long doing anything but reading, I have to be doing something with my hands, which is why I generally do my nails right before I read, right before I go to sleep. Plus now with the dogs, there's really no way I can do them during the day unless I want dog hair cemented in my nails. :oP

I can't believe you freehanded yours. Being ambidextrous must be fun! My left hand is useless. Though I do have a bunch of left-over French manicure guides that I can use in nonstandard ways. The only problem is that they leave sticky residue. I'm wondering if I ought to let theme dry overnight, wash the residue off in the morning, THEN apply a quick-drying basecoat. That might work for your polka dots, too.

it's a blessing and a curse. endless entertainment, but led to a lot of clumsiness as a kid/teen, because i don't have a dominant side. also, i completely mix up left and right all the time, which is currently amusing the hell out of my piano teacher. ("ok, now play the right hand" ::blank stare:: "*sigh*... this hand...")

i should get some nail guides, i've been thinking that... and yeah, maybe doing it in the morning would work. i'm probably just not being patient enough, lol. story of my life...
