Okay, so all comments I made before the entire story was revealed were almost entirely wrong (though I was right in that it wasn't a Big Fat Coming Out article). I still say that tweet was weird and premature, though. Couldn't let the article speak for itself, Mark Wossname? Had to jump the gun there? Though ZQ's blog post was amazing, and I think the better place (vs. the magazine article) to get across (at least some of) what was behind his decision.  Obviously, the magazine interview was done weeks if not months ago.  It would seem that the interview was done very recently.  Maybe he came out to his family during the reunion in Texas, and so was ready to come out in the press?  Or maybe that's too private to speculate on.

Can I say that it feels kind of weird to celebrate? Like, I feel like a bad fan for not jumping up and down and posting flaily gifs all over the place, but... I don't know where I was going with that. It's just a thing, a thing we kind of already knew and pretended didn't matter. Low-key celebration, maybe? A couple of guys in party hats quietly waving little rainbow flags? Maybe one of them has one of those unfurling party honkers that goes "TWEEEEEEEEE"? Or maybe I'm wrong (again) and we should all just go apeshit with joy. :oD  Either way, I'm good to go.

It is a happy day.

I'm confused... How could the article have been done that long ago? Occupy Wall Street hasn't been going on for that long at this point and he is in NY this week for signings and things around Comic Con so I actually assumed the article was written last week?

Believe me, I know a lot less about Occupy Wall Street than I should considering I go to a public interest law school in NYC and everyone at my school and their mother has attended the protests, except for me and a few people I'm friends with. :-P lol! But it's only been going on for a month (which I can't even believe, since the media has only JUST started covering it). *shrugs*

At any rate, it's an important interview as a whole!! XD

I feel low-key about the whole thing myself because I can't help feeling that it's just none of my business. It breaks my heart a little that someone just can't be; that they have to be classified as... something. Plus, his "saying" he's gay is not coming from a happy place.

why am I constantly missing out on everything? I mean, I'm a huge Quinto/Pine/Star Trek fan and everything, yet I keep reading stuff at your journal first. Maybe it's because I'm from Germany, where all of the above really aren't that big a topic that any newspaper would write about it? Or because I don't have the money to read gossip mags? Huh.

When you posted that other post earlier today I went and checked out ontd_pinto and now I read this post and have no idea whether he came out himself or not bc you're kinda unclear about it. But to be honest, I'm not that big of a stalker that I would break out the googlefu to check. I'm totally with bbutercup there... while I might squee about it being "true" as opposed to "merely fangirl thinking", I feel bad about how it got out and how an artist as multifarious as Zach will likely have to deal with crap about his sexual orientation instead of just do is art.

Eh, ramble on all you like. Here's (http://nymag.com/movies/features/zachary-quinto-2011-10/) a link to the article in question, in which Zach refers to himself "as a gay man" twice. So the article is not about his coming out, per se, but it's pretty unambiguous. And it's not a gossip magazine, either -- it's coming straight from Zach, which is why everyone's partying.

And, yeah, it's a shame that he's going to be reduced to his orientation, at least for the first few months. Hopefully the buzz around that particular item will die down as his career moves forward.

the celebration to me is not that he "finally" came out or anything like that. i didn't think that he "should" or question his motivation to this point or anything like that. i do hope that he feels good about it and that it may even be a relief or something that he'd wanted to do before but hadn't because of pressure or something external. but the celebration for me is just because it's something that we all kind of thought would happen eventually, that for many ZQ fans, it was just kind of in the back of our minds that someday he would come out in some way, and today is that day. so to me it's more like, today is a day that we've been (on some level) waiting for...so let's celebrate.

kind of like how we all know that, someday, Pinto will walk again...

I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy who tweeted, thinking that maybe it was agreed between them that he would do it, to sort of give forewarning and ease the news into the public consciousness. But I don't think that's the case, it brought more immediate attention to it if anything, and it just feels like a a typical journalistic attempt to make sure we knew who got the scoop. Also, because we didn't know the context at that time, it also invited people to speculate how it might be done and, yes, criticise on potential ways when no one actually knew anything.

I still feel weird celebrating too. I'm all very much for "yay, go ZQ!" as it was an incredible thing to do. But I still feel somewhat sad he's had to compromise his previous position as a general human being rather than a ~merely gay one. I also think he'd like to try and keep things as low key as the interview itself was. Still, each to their own I guess. I can't criticise anyone.

yeeeahh... i dunno. i feel very conflicted, for reasons people above have already stated better than i will. i wish it were a non-issue. i worry that now that's all anyone will talk about in regard to him. i feel badly for him as a person that he has to sacrifice his personal privacy.

i get hwy he did it (assuming he did it for the reasons he states), and that's admirable. i appreciate that it's a big decision for him, and he's done it classily. but... i don't know that i can celebrate someone having to state their sexual preferences in a national magazine.

i realize it's a stage we have to go through to get to the point where it's a non-starter, but that doesn't mean i have to like it. lol.

While the part of me who lives in a perfect little world where things like sexual orentation don't matter in the least, the part of me who is still kind of scarred by my first coming out experience (to a not-so-understanting relative) is effing proud of Zach right now. I don't wanna celebrate that like a new holiday, but i'm really touched by what he said in his blog, and i feel like the more celebs actually out and proud, the more role models for the teens who suffer and are looking for hope. That being said, i kinda have an issue with the journalist tweeting before Zach officially made an annoucement. It really wasn't his place to do so.
Anyway, Zach was, as always, very classy and articulate, and i'm proud of him.

I wish he didn't have to out himself, so to speak, but at least it wasn't a "Yes, I'm gay" People magazine cover (poor NPH). I admire the courage or just plain guts it took to utter those words, "As a gay man." I'm hoping that thanks to people, such as Alan Cumming and NPH, and his immense talent his career will not suffer. I think the low-key, almost nonchalant way he dropped it into conversation should serve him well. That it is just one facet of his life and persona, and not the only thing that defines him. I also admire his desire to live an authentic. Hopefully, the world will allow him to do just that. :D

Re the timing of the tweet, I know the magazine's probably supposed to hit the stands on Monday, but it was already on the rack this morning at my grocery store here in Jersey. So the tweet wasn't all that premature.
